5Look ma, no batteries  Sep 12, 2005 By Maria Poole "Maria Poole"
We got this for my 10 month old son who is showing an interest in pushing things around and pulling up on furniture. Therefore I really appreciated the advice of another reviewer to put ankle weights in the middle compartment to keep the train from tipping over. That being said my son truly enjoys everything about this train. I really debated on this purchase because I did not know which push and ride toy to purchase or if it would really be used. I almost bought the one by Little Tikes but after reading all the reviews I decided to go for this one once I found it available with free shipping from Baby Universe. Also the fact that this one seems to be a little higher off the ground is good for my son whose height is in the 90th percentile. My son also enjoys the different levers and knobs which I also enjoy since they don't require batteries! I do agree with another reviewer that a brake would be a nice addition for when my son is "working on the train". I like the fact that this ride on toy steers very well since we have an octagon shaped living room. Obviously that may not be a concern for a lot of people. I can also see the point of the argument for a push toy that stays on a straight path but my son mainly uses it on carpet which slows the turning down when the toy is pushed.

Update: My son is now 2 1/2 and this has remained in his most played with toy collection. He now picks this over any other ride on to push around and play "crash" with. It has taken quite a beating and still looks brand new. Since it enables him to steer the train he prefers this one since he doesn't have to pick it up to turn it.

5Great Ride On!  Aug 14, 2004
This was my son's Santa gift for Christmas. He was an early walker and 10mo old when he got it. He loved it from day one and pushed it all over. Since then he has learned how to ride it and one of his favorite things is to put things in the seat and push it around. He also love to sit on it and chase the dogs around. At 18mo old this is still one of his favorite toys and is standing up well to my son's constant use and abuse (he does stand on it and sit on it while its on its side). I love to find toys that don't flash and make noise. I think toys like this one encourage more imaginative play. The levers and stuff do reward exploration with spinning, squeaking and simple reactions. This is very sturdy and my son doesn't have any problems with it tipping over. This is definately one of our favorites.

5The best money we've spent on a toy  Sep 03, 2005 By Research Mom
My 2-year-old son loves ride-on toys - we have three different ones at home and he's ridden on lots of others at friends' houses. This is hands-down the best ride-on toy I've seen. It's just the right height, very durable and easy to roll and steer. It has some nice little gadgets to play with, but nothing electronic or annoying. He started using it at age 1 and I've had friends' kids up to age 3.5 use it with no problem. We even bought one for both of the grandparents' houses because it's something he can use for a couple of years.

5Awesome, Well-Built Toy  Jun 14, 2006 By Reviewer
My daughter loves this toy. At different times, she's enjoyed each of the different features. Right now, she likes opening up the seat & pretending to take something out & giving it to us. We got the train for her when she was 11 months. She started out pushing it around & now rides it all over the place. At 17 months, she doesn't quite understand the steering part, but I like that it poses a challenge for her & will grow w/her. This toy is extremely well-made, & I love that it was pre-assembled. When I researched riding toys, I read of many headaches that were brought on by trying to assemble other ones.
1/13/10 Update: My daughter, now 5y.o., still uses this on occasion! It's probably because the steering is amazing--she "corners on rails." Granted, the push button thing on the steering wheel with the balls broke long ago, but now it's used to hold little toys as she tools around the house. Other than that, it's very durable. I can easily ride on it at 5'4" & 100++ pounds.

5Teach 'em to walk  Jul 16, 2007 By Brian A. Sherman
I'd like to start my review by spreading the word I read here - If you tape some small weights inside the seat of this toy it will make it much sturdier. I put 20lbs of dumbbells in there when my daughter was first learning how to pull up so it wouldn't fall over on her.

This toy was the catalyst that propelled my 11-month old baby to be an 11-month old toddler. She learned to walk by pushing on this toy. The first time she pulled herself up with this toy and walked unassisted my knees were like jello, as if it was me learning to walk for the first time!

My daughters older cousins come over and play with this toy too. It's a very good value.
